Guest Lecture: Suzanne Farrin - "Translation, Presencing, and the Expressionless"

Wed, April 3, 2024 • 4:30pm - 5:30pm (1h) • Weitz Cinema
“A boundary is not that at which something stops but...that from which something begins its presencing...A space is something that has been made room for, something that has been freed, namely, within a boundary. A boundary is that from which something begins its essential unfolding...Space is the essence that for which room has been made, that which is let into its bounds.” (Heidegger)
Where is my end? From which wind
did you flee from? finding hope,
which will not arrive, if so I will be, what I was,
music and poetry without instrument. (Maria Scalera Stellini)
In this lecture, composer Suzanne Farrin will present ideas about her writing process by examining translation, language, and experience. She will outline how specifically the poetry of Michelangelo outlines his philosophy on art, and how his process of subtraction led to the creation of her musical language. She will show how something as simple as syntax heard through the lens of time can be a guide for understanding subtext, and how, in her world, meaningless words are filled with meaning.
Sponsored by The Elizabeth Nason Distinguished Women Visitors Fund and The Christopher U. Light Lectureship.
